Understanding Self-Awareness as an attribute for Emotional Intelligence.

Self-awareness is the ability to recognize, understand, and have insight into your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and characteristics. It involves being conscious of your strengths, weaknesses, values, beliefs, and emotions. Self-awareness allows you to have a clear and accurate perception of yourself, which is essential for personal growth, effective decision-making, and building healthy relationships. It is a foundational element of emotional intelligence and plays a crucial role in self-improvement and self-acceptance.

Building self-awareness in your emotional intelligence journey involves several steps namely:

Self-Reflection: This involves taking time to reflect on your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. Consider past experiences and how you reacted to them.  Documenting and noting areas where you had flaws can help better understand your emotions and which areas need to be amended.

Identify your Emotions: Learn to recognize and label your emotions accurately. This simply means distinguishing between different feelings, such as anger, sadness, joy, and anxiety. Be honest enough to tell yourself how you feel, how others make you feel, and what they are doing that isn't helping you shape your emotions.

Seek Feedback: No man is an island of knowledge, that is why feedback is important. Ask for feedback from trusted friends, family members, or mentors about your emotional tendencies. Your mode of approach and how you relate things with them can offer valuable insights into how you come across to others.

Set Goals: Define specific emotional intelligence goals for yourself. What areas do you want to improve, such as handling stress, empathizing with others, or managing conflicts better? Setting goals for your emotional intelligence journey can help you target the right materials to get in meeting the set goals, the right mentor to source for, and the right methods to apply to hit the set goals. Setting goals for your emotional intelligence journey can help you direct your energy, resources, and time in the right direction.

Practice Empathy: As part of the components of Emotional Intelligence, Empathy is a core section of EQ, working on your ability to understand and empathize with the emotions of others can improve your interpersonal relationships and communication skills. This can help you visualize solutions that foster equality and a sustainable approach that meets human rights goals.

Manage Stress: Since stress isn't a respecter of persons, it is wise to develop healthy coping mechanisms for managing stress and negative emotions. This might include exercise, going for a walk, meditation, or seeking support from a therapist. These little drops of action can help boost your strength for your emotional intelligence.

Track Progress: Regularly assess your progress in building self-awareness. Celebrate your successes and adjust your strategies when needed.

Continuous Learning: As the wise will say, learning never ends. Read books, attend workshops, or take courses on emotional intelligence to deepen your understanding and skills on the subject manners.

Remember that building self-awareness is an ongoing process, and it takes time and effort. Be patient with yourself and stay committed to developing your emotional intelligence over time.
